Extension Care Guide

Keep your extensions looking gorgeous — and your natural hair healthy.

Your new extensions are an investment, and taking care of them properly will help them last longer, look better, and stay comfortable. Here’s everything you need to know to maintain your hand-tied or tape-in extensions at home.

Washing & Conditioning

Wash gently + less often
Extensions don’t need frequent washing. Aim for 1–2 times per week to keep them hydrated and smooth.

Use sulfate-free, extension-safe products
Clean, moisturizing shampoo and conditioner will protect both your natural hair and your wefts. Avoid heavy, oily products at the root.

Condition mid-lengths to ends only
Keep conditioner away from the bonds to prevent slipping, especially with tape-ins.

Drying & Brushing

Brush often (but gently)
Use a wet brush or extension-friendly detangler. Start at the ends and work your way up, supporting the wefts with your hand.

Dry completely before bed
Sleeping on damp extensions can cause matting. Blow-dry your roots and let the ends air-dry if you prefer a softer finish.

Use tension when blow-drying
Hold the weft or tape area as you dry to avoid tugging or unnecessary strain.

Styling

Heat protectant is non-negotiable
Extensions can handle heat, but always protect them from damage.

Keep hot tools below 350°F
Higher temperatures can shorten the life of your wefts and dry out the hair.

Avoid heavy oils at the root
They can cause slippage, especially with tape-in extensions. Light serums on the ends only.

Sleeping

Brush before bed
A quick detangle will prevent matting overnight.

Sleep in a loose braid or low pony
This keeps your extensions smooth and tangle-free.

Use a silk or satin pillowcase
It reduces friction and helps both your natural hair and extensions last longer.

Maintenance Appointments

Hand-Tied Wefts
Move-ups every 6–10 weeks depending on your natural growth and routine.

Tape-Ins
Move-ups every 6–8 weeks, including removal, cleaning, and reinstall.

Staying consistent with maintenance is the best way to ensure your extensions stay comfortable, seamless, and healthy.

What to Avoid

  • No conditioner or oils on the bonds

  • No tight ponytails in the first 48 hours

  • No picking or scratching at the wefts or tapes

  • No swimming

  • No sleeping with wet hair

  • Avoid sunscreen that is not mineral-based, as this can alter the color of your extensions.
